Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Botanical Dyeing at Home

This virtual class takes place online Thursdays July 30, August 6, August 13 and August 20 from 5-7 p.m. and is taught by Lesley Darling.

Get started with natural dyeing at home in this four-week class! This workshop is designed for novice natural dyers who want to figure out the best ways to start dyeing with natural botanicals at home. Students will receive materials for two natural dye projects (using madder root and marigolds) and source their own materials for one dye project themselves from common kitchen ingredients.

The first three weeks will be used to introduce concepts and techniques for each of the three dye projects, which students can complete at any point between classes, and the last week to share results and learning. Topics covered will include creating dye baths, bundle dyeing, ecoprints, selection of tools and materials, using mordents and more.

This is a virtual class taught over Zoom; students need a good internet connection and device with video and audio capacity (such as a computer or tablet) to participate.

Materials kits are included in the class fee and will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute or shipping for an additional fee of $5. Students will also receive additional instructions about required tools and materials to collect from home after registration.
